Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is usually caused by single adenoma. Functional parathyroid cysts are a rare cause of PHPT. Parathyroid cysts can be subdivided into nonfunctional, without biochemical derangement, or functional, with elevated serum calcium accompanying clinical evidence of hyperparathyroidism.
